Lib. 204 / Project 2 / JoAnn Toney
I went to fact finder (www.factfinder.census.gov) and in my area the total population is 86,877 and of that in my area (Long Beach) the ethnicity is as follows Black or African American are 24.0% Asian 10.4% and Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander 2.7%. Languages spoken other than English with five and over are 52.4%. I found this very interesting that High School graduates in Long Beach were 60.9% and with Bachelors Degree’s or higher 8.8%. The industry most prevalent in Long Beach is Retail Trade and second is Health care and social assistant. The sources of this information came from www.censtats.census.gov . I have researched The Libraries in my area and surrounding areas and there are 12 Libraries and five have free wireless and all have family learning centers with homework helpers to assist grades K-8 to help with a variety of school work. I have been on some web site such as www.ipl.gov and www.lbpl.org and enjoyed them both. I have also visited 2 Libraries in my area and I loved what they had to offer the reference section in my local library reference area did not carry major items such as Library of congress subject headings are the encyclopedia of associations, these Items had to be viewed at the main library and you can visit the library of congress online at www.loc.gov/aba . With all the Demographic knowledge I have found in my area and with the knowledge of what ages the library service as far as ages, My proposal would be and set up to help the students in the age area of 14 thru 18, because these are the ages that children need to start getting prepares for college and or the work field they would like to go into. It would have a career center to help the children decide on a career and the knowledge they would need to get there. My reference desk would have all the major books such as I have mentioned, it would have a computer room with a computer teacher to give certain class dealing with the computer. I would also have voluntary class for students to learn the library and means of different research avenues. I would have it were the student could set an appointment for one on one tutoring for any subjects. My Library would be set up for higher education. And the computers would have all the latest website connections with Library 2.0 features. What would make my Library stand out from most libraries would be the services. IA would have bright sighs highlighting what we offer and were different materials are located. I would have a big sign in front of the reference desk with a big smile on it Saying (ask me)

Over the past few weeks we have use various web sites. I my self is guilty if using Google for searches, however I don’t just go to the first web site that comes up. I try to find site that I believe is credible. I have found and I do use most sites that or organizational such as edu, org,. Sites that or of library sites. I found a good site for searching statistics is one we have read about just this past week, factsfinder.census.org. And for biographical information I would recommend the school Library web sites and one that I learned about is IPL .org. is have information on just about anything you need to research. Another way I found to be sure if a site is accurate, look to see if there is an email address in order to ask question, see id there is an updated as of to see how often information is updated. And see if there is and organization posted as running the site. See if there are credible links to other sites as well. I found one web site that would help you to understand how to evaluate a web site. Its call five criteria for evaluating web pages. www.library.cornell.edu

If I were managing a library and had 5,000.00 to decide what to purchase I would slit it up an purchase some for electronic materials and some to put ion the shelves such as new encyclopedias and statistical abstracts etc. reason being that even in this modern age we are in everyone does not own a computer and there are some who choose not to learn how to use one are just haven’t learn how. The down fall to only using the self version of material is that you limited to what’s there, and the web site gives you much more to choose from. Print material is not becoming obsolete mainly because of the reasons I just mentioned. The only thing about print material is the it is limited, I believe library collections would be best serve in research for students doing research. There some thing that I have notice which made me say that the web is a better source of information and I thought about that in doing discussion 7 and that is when I was coming up as children in school we always used the dictionary, but it gave straight and to the point definitions, with the web the dictionary give you that and much more, so I can sat that is one good reason for the web.
