That a good question and really what sites I would tell a patron to use first would really be based on what they are researching. But to start I would tell them to start with the facts. So that would be facts on file. Then I would tell hem to go to proquest to maybe see if there any scholarly journal on he subject. If it is a government subject then of course search the government sponsored websites. And one I love to use is LII.org were you can search a variety of heading. I would not recommend wikipedia for research only because it gives varied meaning which may not pertain to your subject that you are researching. And then the encyclopedia which really do give very good information.

Well yes we have gone over a lot of research site and information, the research question only drive me crazy when I have a hard time finding them. I have the erge to just Google a lot when I find it impossible to find the information that I am looking for and must admit is guilty of using it when all else fails. The information has been sometimes overwhelming, but has given the ability and the knowledge to go to a web site that I know would contain the information, I try to knowledge myself with the different search sites in order to know which one I should go to for certain information I am looking for. This class Hs given me so many different avenues in doing my research and a since of confidence in doing so as well

Reflection #8 Brainstorm
I would instruct other patrons in learning the Library to do the same as I did. I would give them an idea as to what classes are the best in my opinion and what I learn from. I would direct them to take a course in Library 3 because I feel this class would give them a fun way of learning how to do research and the basics of learning research and then Library 204 for which give you more detail on the certain search engines there are to use and how to use them. It gives you the knowledge of what information the different search site will provide you with. I must admit Library 204 is a brain teaser it will make you learn how to research and I must admit I don’t know much of what I need to, but I can get a research paper done if necessary.

Project 2
Lib. 204 / Project 2 / JoAnn Toney
I went to fact finder (www.factfinder.census.gov) and in my area the total population is 86,877 and of that in my area (Long Beach) the ethnicity is as follows Black or African American are 24.0% Asian 10.4% and Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander 2.7%. Languages spoken other than English with five and over are 52.4%. I found this very interesting that High School graduates in Long Beach were 60.9% and with Bachelors Degree’s or higher 8.8%. The industry most prevalent in Long Beach is Retail Trade and second is Health care and social assistant. The sources of this information came from www.censtats.census.gov . I have researched The Libraries in my area and surrounding areas and there are 12 Libraries and five have free wireless and all have family learning centers with homework helpers to assist grades K-8 to help with a variety of school work. I have been on some web site such as www.ipl.gov and www.lbpl.org and enjoyed them both. I have also visited 2 Libraries in my area and I loved what they had to offer the reference section in my local library reference area did not carry major items such as Library of congress subject headings are the encyclopedia of associations, these Items had to be viewed at the main library and you can visit the library of congress online at www.loc.gov/aba . With all the Demographic knowledge I have found in my area and with the knowledge of what ages the library service as far as ages, My proposal would be and set up to help the students in the age area of 14 thru 18, because these are the ages that children need to start getting prepares for college and or the work field they would like to go into. It would have a career center to help the children decide on a career and the knowledge they would need to get there. My reference desk would have all the major books such as I have mentioned, it would have a computer room with a computer teacher to give certain class dealing with the computer. I would also have voluntary class for students to learn the library and means of different research avenues. I would have it were the student could set an appointment for one on one tutoring for any subjects. My Library would be set up for higher education. And the computers would have all the latest website connections with Library 2.0 features. What would make my Library stand out from most libraries would be the services. IA would have bright sighs highlighting what we offer and were different materials are located. I would have a big sign in front of the reference desk with a big smile on it Saying (ask me)

Over the past few weeks we have use various web sites. I my self is guilty if using Google for searches, however I don’t just go to the first web site that comes up. I try to find site that I believe is credible. I have found and I do use most sites that or organizational such as edu, org,. Sites that or of library sites. I found a good site for searching statistics is one we have read about just this past week, factsfinder.census.org. And for biographical information I would recommend the school Library web sites and one that I learned about is IPL .org. is have information on just about anything you need to research. Another way I found to be sure if a site is accurate, look to see if there is an email address in order to ask question, see id there is an updated as of to see how often information is updated. And see if there is and organization posted as running the site. See if there are credible links to other sites as well. I found one web site that would help you to understand how to evaluate a web site. Its call five criteria for evaluating web pages. www.library.cornell.edu

If I were managing a library and had 5,000.00 to decide what to purchase I would slit it up an purchase some for electronic materials and some to put ion the shelves such as new encyclopedias and statistical abstracts etc. reason being that even in this modern age we are in everyone does not own a computer and there are some who choose not to learn how to use one are just haven’t learn how. The down fall to only using the self version of material is that you limited to what’s there, and the web site gives you much more to choose from. Print material is not becoming obsolete mainly because of the reasons I just mentioned. The only thing about print material is the it is limited, I believe library collections would be best serve in research for students doing research. There some thing that I have notice which made me say that the web is a better source of information and I thought about that in doing discussion 7 and that is when I was coming up as children in school we always used the dictionary, but it gave straight and to the point definitions, with the web the dictionary give you that and much more, so I can sat that is one good reason for the web.

Blog Reflection #3
Hummmm, I wonder what I could do to get the word across that there is very good and other ways other than just using the internet or the Wikipedia. Well for me I thought that that was the only way until I took Library 3. I have been in school almost 3 years and all I new as far as doing research was the internet are going to the library looking up the subject. I took Library 3 and a whole new world of knowledge opened up. The way to get the word out , especially if there are new students in college for the first time, I said once before is making library a requirement for college, the other way I thought would be a good way is for teachers to give hand outs with the sites on them. With taking Library 3 and also Library 204 it has enable me when given an assignment to more less know which avenue I feel would best get the assignment done. I have had a good time in showing my daughter how to go to different web sites to do research.

Project 1 reference observation
JoAnn Toney Project 1 Reference Observation
For my reference observation project I decided to visit my local library, The North Library located at 5571 Orange Ave Long Beach Ca 90805 phone number is 562-570-1047. I have been there before not to observe, but for books. The Library is quite small and in my opinion. I did not feel comfortable being that everything was so close together. When you walk in the library the information desk is there to your left and to its left there the area for the small children and the small tables and chairs right a cross from the information desk is the reference desk which there are 2 people that sit there and behind them is about 4 rows of tables across from there is a row up against the wall of computer about 5 that I noticed. At the reference desk there were no specialty section, they had a few books for every category, but they did not have the library of congress, I was told that most main libraries carry that one. There cataloging system in the library and on line was quit well and I have used both. I ask the help desk what type of online access they use and he replied venison and that they use the regular internet and what ever you could access from that is basically what they used. The computer usage was 30 minutes at a time if there was more time need and you could have it at the discretion of the librarian and there is no one else that need to use it. The library had a family learning center that help the children with there home work and it was open everyday. There were pamphlets letting you know of different functions. The Library from what I could see catered to everyday people such as kids needing to do research you average reader who enjoyed reading and I Evan noticed that the children would use the computer for my space as well. I Evan saw people on the computer feeling out job application as well. So the Library was use for every aspect of a persons needs. The Librarian and assistants were very pleasant, very helpful. You did not feel intimidated by them. Over all it’s a small comfortable Library, but for me personally I feel it should be broken up into areas with tables in other space so that everything that everyone is doing would not disturb you.

BLOG REFLECTION #2 TOPIC
I don’t work in a Library, but in taking the Library 3 class have enlightened me so much on the use of the library the library on the web and all aspects of the library, I will start of with the only thing I saw in the library that I visited and that should be implemented is a class in common courtesy for employers, no it all but some. I believe your experiences in the library should be a memorable learning experience. I had a bad experience in a library as a patron once and I did not take that out on the facility and say I will never come back, because I also the same day had a very good experience with one of the other librarians, which had an excellent personality was very pleasant and helpful and very knowledgeable with is what a librarian should be. The only thing a library could Implement is keeping up with the latest technology... oh would nor help to implement a small coffee shop in the library for those who have intensive research to do J
